Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Carbon Heat?

Carbon Heat is a carbon-based film that produces full coverage heat. It is smooth, thin (about the thickness of two business cards) and easy to install.

How does CarbonicHeat work?

The energy activated from the thermostat is transmitted through flat copper wire elements that are located on both sides of the carbon-based film, with a hot side and a neutral side. When turned on by the thermostat, the carbon material acts as a resistor, heating the entire film evenly with no hot or cold spots.

How complicated is the installation compared to existing radiant heating technology?

Carbonic Heat is extremely easy to install. Simply place it on the floor and secure it with nails, staples or glue. CarbonicHeat can also be walked on during the installation period. Many steps and significant time are saved compared to the installation of hydronic and wire mesh systems.

How is the temperature controlled?

The temperature is controlled by a thermostat specifically designed for electric radiant heating systems. Our thermostats have three function options: room, floor sensor and room/floor sensor. We recommend using the ambient/floor sensor mode. We offer programmable and non-programmable thermostats. This product should not be used without a thermostat.

Can Pisos Cálidos be installed with all types of wood floors?

Some types of wood flooring are not recommended for installation over radiant heated floors. Always consult with the wood flooring manufacturer before installing wood flooring over any type of radiant heating. Pisos Cálidos has tables showing the recommended woods to install over radiant heated floors. However, since Warm Floors operates at a relatively low temperature of 80-85°F and heats evenly, there is no danger of over curing or overheating the wood flooring material.

Can Warm Floors be installed in wet areas such as shower beds and saunas?

Yes, Pisos Cálidos can be installed in humid places, since the film has three layers of protection on each side and is waterproof. Our thermostats include GFCI protection circuits for safety in wet areas.

Yes. With Warm Floors, the homeowner can reduce the setting of their central heating system by 6 to 7 degrees and still feel comfortable. Warm Floors warms the objects in the room as well as the floor, and when your feet are warmer, the room temperature can be reduced. The use of a programmable thermostat supplied by Warm Floors allows the homeowner to heat only when additional heat is needed. Reducing the home’s reliance on the forced air system can help reduce overall energy consumption.

Is Pisos Cálidos energy efficient?

Yes. With Warm Floors, up to 98% of electricity is converted to heat and radiated through the finished floor. You can save up to 30% on utility bills, depending on your location and application.

What are the main advantages of Pisos Cálidos over other types of electric radiant heating?

Warm Floors is the thinnest underfloor heating film on the market, allowing installation in areas where floor height restrictions would not normally allow underfloor heating. When electrified, the carbon material of Warm Floors acts as a resistor by heating the entire surface of the film, resulting in uniform heat with no hot spots or cold spots. Single cable heating systems, if not installed carefully, can create hot or cold spots and fail if a cable is damaged.

What are the advantages of Pisos Cálidos compared to hydronic radiant heating?

Warm Floor systems are very convenient to install in both new construction and, especially, in remodeling. Warm Floor systems have no moving parts and installation labor is simple. Hydronic systems are typically installed in new construction and can be very difficult to install in retrofits due to considerations of floor height and the required support structure strong enough to accept the hydronic system. Hydronic systems can be mechanically complicated with valves, manifolds, boilers, storage tanks, etc. Labor costs are usually high. Hydronic systems require a separate mechanical room with boiler and pump to activate and control the system.

What about maintenance and service of Pisos Cálidos?

Warm Floor systems have no moving parts. After proper installation, there is little or no reason for the system to fail. Pisos Cálidos offers the longest warranty in the industry, 35 years.

What are the health benefits?

Pisos Cálidos produces Far Infrared heat. Far Infrared is considered a healing heat that is commonly used in health spas, saunas and centers to treat a wide variety of ailments. Warm floors and other radiant heating systems also positively affect the indoor air quality of your home. Since there are no ducts or air circulation as in forced air systems, no allergens, dust or dust mites are introduced into the home environment. Warm Floors is also a dry heat that does not encourage mold growth.

What are the electrical requirements for Warm Floors?

Warm Floor systems can operate on 110V or 220V, which is a distinct advantage over other radiant heating products. You can select the power source depending on the ease of installation and the size of the installation. The system requires a dedicated circuit.

Can I use my existing electrical system to power Warm Floors?

Yes, power requirements are detailed in the installation manual. Warm floors require a dedicated circuit that can be determined by your electrician.

Warm Floors film can be repaired. If you suspect that your underfloor heating needs repair, please contact our Customer Service department at 855.558.5200.

Can I install the product myself?

Yes, however, it is recommended that a certified electrician make the final connection to the thermostat and electrical panel.

Is it necessary to wait for the thin-set mortar to dry before setting the tile?

No, this is a great advantage of installing Warm Floors. Tile or stone installation can begin after the Warm Floors film adheres to the subfloor. Some workers prefer to install tile or stone after the Warm Floors film has set overnight, which is permitted.

Warm Floors radiates heat from the edge of the film?

No, normally you will only feel heat directly above the Warm Floor film where it is installed. Some types of tiles or stones can radiate heat horizontally, but the amount is very minimal. Note: An important advantage of installing Warm Floors is that the film can go under the cabinet trim space.

Can the Warm Floors film be removed and the cables rearranged?

If you discover that you made a design error during the initial installation, you can carefully cut the electrical connections, adjust your design, and reconnect the electrical connections with new wire harnesses and new tape purchased from CarbonicHeat.

Can other components such as wire harnesses and tape be replaced?

No, other components such as adhesive tapes, wire harnesses, connectors, appropriate thermostats, etc. cannot be replaced. Significant testing was conducted by CarbonicHeat and entities such as Intertek/ETL and UL 1693, resulting in the selection of specific materials to ensure system performance and safety.
